** Premiere - Jaded Hipster Choir - “Benevolence” **
We sat engulfed in the darkness for sometime. Our warm breath seemed to blanket our bodies, causing it to become scaled and goose fleshed. In the night, our hands became our eyes, feeling their way around each other to distinguish and define who we truly were. I would claw and bite, feeling your skin in my mouth, hoping to taste your true essence. If I had caused you to break, I would not have objected, rather, I secretly wished for a crackling, a fissure in your skin. You would prod and pull at me, wanting to overtake me. Afraid of you discovering my true identity, I would shy away at your touch every so often. As you lovingly placed your ear to my chest, my heart would pound manically. And when you smiled, so knowingly and accepting, the beat would slow an steady. Loved and accepted. Redeemed.
Jaded Hipster Choir’s upcoming EP, “Kodama,” is heavily inspired by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli films. “Benevolence” plays out like a redemption song at dusk. It builds to a pulsating climax, like a heart beat reflecting on an action. There are certain Stravinsky-esque odes, almost like a “Rite of Spring” nod scattered throughout. It is humble and reflective, ascending and descending, timid yet accepting - like a moment of discovery.
“Kodama” will be released on Wonder Beard Tapes sometime in Dec/January. In the meantime, you can download the single at bandcamp.

Young Henry’s “U/N” contains wonderfully crafted experimental songs that are quite the departure from his previous “It Must Have Been The Weather”. This time, vocals illuminate the tracks, hiding and presenting themselves ever so delicately. They dance around gracefully like shadows at dusk - betraying their source of light. “Bat”, the opening track, plays out like a pop funeral dirge with gloomy synths and ghostly vocals. Sounds shuffle and buzz - uniting with the cloudy indistinguishable lyrics. Mysterious with a touch of playful grimness.

Today is Unholy Rhythms’ three month anniversary. I cannot express enough how grateful I am to everyone that has linked me, reblogged me, and just dropped me a note to show their love for this site. It seems as if every single day, I’m meeting more wonderful people, hearing more wonderful music, and just really falling in love with this “job” of mine.
In honor of this day, I curated a mix composed of older (mainly late 60s-late 70s) bollywood songs. On mixes, I usually stay away from repeating composers and artists, however, I kind of went back on that. The reason was simply because they are more “well known” but still obscure and hey, good music is good music, right?

Premiere: Guerre - “Young Monk”
I’ve made it wildly known that I am in love with the work of Guerre. From the first time I heard his music, I fell head over heels. Today, I am truly honored to bring you this first exclusive track ever for Unholy Rhythms.
“Young Monk” features satin, smooth, sing-song susurrations layered over a slowed down, lo-fi, r&b beat. There is a hint of provocation and playful flirtation as he croons and snaps - coyly checking that he has your attention. And then it hits you, amongst all the lushness, the track oozes temptation. It tempts you to surrender - let yourself fully abandon any restraint and just melt into this mood.

I waited patiently at the airport for his arrival. My hands sweating, my heart racing, and my mind fixated on what ifs. “What if he doesn’t get off the plane? What if this doesn’t work out? What if this isn’t really happening?” People greeted their loved ones with open arms, with welcome back smiles, and comforting sighs. Everywhere I turned, people were reunited while I stood, apprehensive, by the side lines. As more passengers departed, I grew more anxious. I checked the flight information and my watch, tapping my fingers nervously. I saw a figure in the distance, our eyes met, and I, blushing, buried my face in my hands. The moment we planned for finally arrived and I could not swallow. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t move. I just fell into his arms with glee. Tranquil and soothed.
Houses’ latest track, “Lost In Blue”, is like falling into those outstretched, inviting arms. It is surrounded by hand claps, cloud-like vocals, undulating synths, and a ticking beat that simulates the patter of your restless heart. The vocals slowly move in like fog, unfolding and climbing over itself, until it envelops the dewy instrumentation - a supernal, exalted ambiance. Just allow me to fall back into this melody, hoping it will catch and coddle me with accepting arms.

The word “wizard” might evoke associations with darker or vexing music. Instead, Wizards conjures up blissful electronic tunes in the realm of ra calium, isan, or bathcrones. Glowing, cozy, and welcoming, “Meadows of Canterbury” graciously wraps you in alluring, chopped (sampled) vocals and warm beats. It is transcendental - completely allowing one to lose themselves in airy soundscapes.
“Spinning Flowers”, their self-released EP, wonderfully captures fluidity and movement within the lyric-less stanzas. From start to finish, the songs transform from languid buoyancy to blissful jubilation.

Go back to school with this new, gorgeous digital 7” from Caged Animals. “The Rainfall” picks up where the first track, “All My Friends” leaves off, creating a charming story told in two parts. With pulsating, throbbing synths and 808 heartbeat synths, it is nostalgic and blithe without being overtly saccharine. There are prism-like sounds resembling memory fractals hidden deep within your heart. Like looking back at childhood and laughing, fondly recalling warm, sun drenched memories..
